How to Care for Embroidered Children's Clothing

There's something truly special about a piece of clothing made just for your child — and embroidered designs deserve a little extra love to keep them looking their best. Whether you've just unboxed a personalised travel top ready for your next family adventure or unwrapped a birthday outfit for a milestone moment, these simple care steps will help your Sew.Honey pieces stay beautiful, wash after wash.

1. Always Wash at 30°C or Lower

High temperatures are the enemy of embroidery. A gentle 30°C cycle — or a dedicated delicates setting — protects both the garment fabric and the embroidery threads from shrinking, warping, or losing their vibrancy. When in doubt, cooler is always kinder.

2. Turn the Garment Inside Out

Before placing anything in the drum, turn the item inside out. This shields the embroidered design from friction against other garments and the drum itself, keeping stitches neat and colours rich for much longer. It's one of the simplest habits that makes the biggest difference.

3. Use a Gentle Detergent

Opt for a mild, non-bio detergent — it's gentler on delicate fibres and on small skin too. Avoid fabric softener directly on embroidered areas, as it can cause the threads to pill or flatten over time.

4. Skip the Tumble Dryer

We recommend air drying all embroidered pieces. Lay the garment flat or hang it to dry away from direct sunlight — which can fade colours — and away from direct heat sources. This keeps the fabric's shape intact and the embroidery threads in great condition.

5. Iron with Care (and a Cloth)

If ironing is needed, always iron on the reverse side of the garment with a cool-to-medium setting. Place a clean, dry cloth between the iron and the fabric for an extra layer of protection. Never iron directly over embroidered sections — heat can melt synthetic threads or flatten the beautiful raised texture of the stitching.

6. Store Thoughtfully

Fold embroidered items rather than hanging them for long periods, which can distort the fabric around heavier stitch areas. Store in a cool, dry place away from damp — especially important for keepsake pieces you're saving for another child or for memory-keeping.

A Note on Our Materials

All Sew.Honey garments are made with care — please refer to the care label on your specific item for fibre content and any additional guidance, as instructions may vary slightly between pieces. If you have any questions about a particular product, we're always happy to help.
